 2018 Preview 


       Cleburne County finished the 2017 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Cleburne County finished sixth in Class 5A region four with a 1-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

       The Tigers lost as many games as in any season since 1986. The defense allowed a team record 404 points last season.

       Cleburne County was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Tigers want to be competitive. They only averaged 17.9 points a game.

       Cleburne County struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 40.4 points a game.

       The Tigers would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 3-17 record. Since 2010, Cleburne County has gone a combined 48-42. Their 53.0% winning percentage ranks 23rd in Class 4A over the past eight seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Cleburne County has managed to compile a record of 180-102. Their 64.0% winning percentage ranks 9th in Class 4A and 64th in the AHSAA.




       The Tigers are led by head coach Michael Shortt who is entering his twenty-first season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 142-87 over the past twenty seasons at Cleburne County. Under his direction the Tigers have qualified for the playoffs a total of fourteen times. They have won seven region crowns with Coach Shortt.

       Coach Shortt's overall record as a head football coach in twenty season stands at 142-87 (62.0%). His 142 wins rank 31st among active coaches in the AHSAA.

       Coach Shortt needs eight wins this season to reach the 150 win milestone.

       The Cleburne County Tigers will play in Class 4A region six during the 2018 season. The Tigers may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 5A to 4A. They will compete in region six this year.

       This season, the Tigers will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region six.

       The Tigers open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent Weaver on Friday, August 24 at Bill Bryan Stadium. Last year the Weaver Bearcats finished with an overall record of 7-5 and in fourth place in Class 3A region five. The Bearcats lost in the second round of the Class 3A playoffs to Colbert Heights by a score of 36-35.

       Cleburne County and Weaver have met a total of 26 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 14-12-0 record against the Bearcats. They last met in 2013 with Cleburne County winning by a score of 44-20.
